Music Inspired by Fear of Illness in the Pre-Anaesthetic
Era
Old Operating Theatre Museum, 9A St Thomas Street, London SE1
9RY
Description:
This experience will be divided into two parts: First, there will be a
short overview by Dr. Nick Newton of the fear of illness and impending
surgery on individuals in the 17th & 18th Century, followed by an
introductory talk from Dr. Tim Smith, focusing on the aetiology and management
of bladder stones in the pre-anaesthetic era.
These brief introductions will set the scene for a concert by the Royal Baroque Ensemble, under the direction of Katarzyna Kowalik, of music composed by Marin, Lully, Froberger, Couperin and Zelenka reflecting the patient's anxieties concerning illness, surgery without anaesthesia and the close encounters with imminent or untimely death. Part of the programme will be the legendary 'Tableau de l'opération de la taille' by Marais - a musical depiction of the stages of an operation for removing a urinary bladder.

11/06/2017 Double Entendre - Music for Two Harpsichords St Michael's Battersea, Cobham Close, London SW11 6SP A double entendre is a figure of speech or a particular way of wording that is devised to be understood in either of two ways, having a double meaning (typically one of the interpretations is rather obvious whereas the other is more subtle). Two young exciting harpsichordists: Katarzyna Kowalik and Pawel Siwczak are both Polish, both studied with same teachers (with Wladyslaw Klosiewicz in Warsaw and with Carole Cerasi in London), and both are based in London, no wonder they decided to form a harpsichord duo as a result of their common passion. Their ‘double entendre’ programme for two harpsichords is a perfect opportunity to explore the subtleties of the harpsichord music and it’s double meanings filtered by two different minds of these inquisitive and imaginative harpsichordists. |

03/09/2016 Double Entendre - Music for Two Harpsichords - Utrecht Early Music Festival Fringe RASA, Pauwstraat 13a 3512 TG Utrecht A double entendre is a figure of speech or a particular way of wording that is devised to be understood in either of two ways, having a double meaning (typically one of the interpretations is rather obvious whereas the other is more subtle). Two exciting harpsichordists: Katarzyna Kowalik and Pawel Siwczak are both Polish, both studied with the same teachers (with Wladyslaw Klosiewicz in Warsaw and with Carole Cerasi in London), and both are based in London, no wonder they decided to form a harpsichord duo as a result of their common passion. Under the name Double Entendre they present a programme of music for two harpsichords or four hands featuring works by Handel, Purcell, Couperin, Le Roux, Buxtehude, Mozart & Boccherini. It is a perfect opportunity to explore the subtleties of the harpsichord playing. It is also neither obvious nor impossible to capture countless meanings filtered and delivered by two different minds of these inquisitive and imaginative performers, in their intertwining interpretations. In this event, Oskar Cox Jensen will be discussing the subject of Shakespeare and Song in the 18th and 19th centuries, accompanied by expert performers in historical practice from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Foregoing the solemn lieder and art-song of the German and Italian traditions, the focus here is on English song in all its diversity, from rough topical ditties sung in the gutter, to the loveliest works of Arne and Linley. We will hear how theatrical composers updated and expanded the songs within Shakespeare's plays; see how Shakespeare's lyrics made their way into the street and the alehouse; and laugh and grimace at comic takes on the Tragedies from burlesques and the music hall.' 13/06/2015 Devonia Concert Series: Sonatas & Arias of German Baroque Devonia Church, Islington, London N1 8JJ George Frideric Handel and Carl Philip Emanuel Bach were two of the most prominent German composers of the 18th-Century. They received a similar education and their careers flourished roughly around the same time. This is, however, where the similarities end. These two giants of baroque music never had an opportunity to meet in person. Although they enjoyed and respected each other’s work, their compositional styles could not be more different. Join us for the recital which juxtaposes the Italian style of Handel’s works with the jarring and extravagant harmonies of CPE Bach and gives the two composers a chance to "meet" on one stage. 30/04/2015 Handel House Talent: Katarzyna Kowalik Handel House Museum, London Harpsichordist Katarzyna Kowalik presents a musical journey through Europe, Africa, the Americas, and the Far East, illustrating the cultural differences and national features captured in the harpsichord music by Frenchmen: Lully, Couperin, Rameau, D'Anglebert, Forqueray, Moyreau, Noblet and Royer. The idea of the portraying nationalities was quite common in the baroque era: In 1726 François Couperin published a collection of four pieces under the title Les Nations - a chamber music tribute to four European nations, which includes 4 types: The Franchise, The Spanish, The Imperial, The Piedmontese. Jean Philippe Rameau follows the baroque fascination in anything exotic. His opera-ballet Les Indes galantes (1735) is thought to refer to exotic lands, not specifically the Indies, but anywhere remote enough to its contemporary audience. The opera consists of the following parts: The Gracious Turk, The Incas of Peru, The Flowers (of Persia), The Savages (with genuine American origins: in 1725 Rameau had heard two Louisiana Indians singing a catchy melody at a Paris fair, and had later made a harpsichord version of it under the title of “Les sauvages”). Katarzyna explores not only the national features of the most significant European styles and exotic references, but also presents lesser known titles such us: La Canadienne, La Chinoisse and La Japonoisse by Christophe Moyreau as well as La Hongroise by Charles Noblet. Katarzyna Kowalik is part of Handel House Talent, an new scheme to further the career development of promising young professional baroque music performers. |

13/09/2014 RAMEAU. British Harpsichord Society Recital Handel House, London Jane Clark introduces the complete harpsichord works of Rameau, briefly explaining their background. The style of the 1706 suite harks back to the 17th century with its opening unmeasured prelude and following dances. In the 1724 suites Rameau introduced several new techniques which he claimed to have invented and which were copied by Domenico Scarlatti who visited Paris in 1724 & 1725. This will be referred to and the far from obvious titles of some of the pieces will be explored. |
